The Rawatawatte Methodist Church
was opened on the 27th of April 1859. Therefore it is the second
oldest church for any Christian denomination in this city. Actually,
the ancestors of the present Methodist community started life as
a church in a church building situated about a mile away from the
present one. In 1859, they shifted to the present site because it
is located by the side of the Galle Road; which is the main highway
that runs through the city. The edifice was a landmark in the city
which no passer-by would fail to recognize. It was higher than any
other building on the highway up to about twenty years back. |
